Acupuncture and pregnancy

Acupuncture and pregnancy

In the midst of overwhelming happiness some women can suffer from pregnancy related health issues and discomforts. Acupuncture is a safe treatment method throughout your whole pregnancy, when done by a licensed and well-trained acupuncturist.

Early pregnancy – supportive care

Acupuncture is a safe and a drug-free treatment method during pregnancy. It can be used to treat for example nausea and vomiting (morning sickness), insomnia, fatigue, nasal congestion, gastro-intestinal issues, stress relief and depression. It is a wonderful method for boosting the immune system and to harmonise the body, creating optimal environment for a healthy and happy pregnancy.

Labor Preparation

Your pregnancy is considered to be full term in between weeks 37-40. From week 36-37 onwards it is a good idea to start your labor preparation treatments. These weekly treatments will help your body to gently adjust itself to labor. It has been shown that women who received weekly acupuncture treatments had shortened labor times, lesser amount of medical inductions, reduction in epidural rate, reduction in emergency caesarean delivery and increase in normal vaginal birth (Betts D & Lenox S 2004; The use of acupuncture as a routine pre-birth treatment).

Optimising fetal presentation

Breech or posterior presentation can be treated with acupuncture and moxibustion. Treatment is done at the clinic and at home throughout a period of 10 days prior to the calculated due date.

The days and weeks before the due date some women start to feel anxious about the upcoming birth. With acupuncture we can calm your mind and treat the potential stress symptoms so you can go into delivery feeling more relaxed. The World Heath Organization (WHO) recognises the benefits of acupuncture in childbirth such as relieving labor pain and a potential reduction in the duration of labor itself. In the case of weakened uterine contractions, acupuncture can also be used to increase the activity of the uterus.

Post-natal time
Acupuncture can be very useful also in the time after pregnancy and labor. The new life with a baby can be tough and while all the healing happening in the woman’s body and the hormones really kicking in it is not unusual to feel down or even depressed. Acupuncture can help with these feelings and aid your body during recovery and to get back to a healthy balance.
